Codex #8: We Thought AI Would Replace Us. It Doesn't. It Will Make Us Better.

I've been thinking a lot lately about how AI is changing engineering teams. Not in theory, but in the actual day-to-day work. The way we write code, review it, and ship it is shifting fast. And most of the fear I hear — AI will replace engineers — misses what's actually happening.

AI isn't replacing engineers. It's changing what good engineers do. The engineers I see thriving aren't the ones who resist AI. They're the ones who've figured out how to use it as a multiplier — offloading the tedious parts, focusing their attention on the decisions that actually matter.

That shift is real, and it's happening faster than most people expected. But it's not the apocalypse some predicted. It's more like a new tool that rewards people who know their craft deeply enough to direct it well.

The engineers who will struggle aren't the ones who don't use AI. They're the ones who use it without thinking — who let it write code they can't read, make decisions they can't explain, or ship things they don't understand. AI amplifies both good and bad engineering habits.

So the question isn't whether to use AI. The question is: what kind of engineer do you want AI to amplify?
